Chapter Nine

‘You’re moving to Denver?’ I gasp, plonking myself down onto the bar stool in surprise.

‘Nate is unhappy, Shauna,’ Sophie’s eyes are filled with regret.

I gaze up, my stomach plunging at my best friend’s words. ‘But, I need you, Soph,’ I complain, unfairly. I know that I am being selfish by voicing my feelings on Sophie’s departure, but I cannot stop myself from questioning why everyone eventually leaves me.

‘Nate gave everything up for me, Shauna, you know that,’ Sophie defends.

‘Nate doesn’t do anything that Nate doesn’t want to do, Sophie,’ I scoff.

‘That maybe so, but I am standing on the side-lines here and watching as my husband loses his enthusiasm for life. All because he wants to be with me. It’s too high a price for anyone, least of all someone who adored his job, his family and his life in general. He has given up too much for me, Shauna. I need to give something back, he makes me so happy but it’s as if his feelings don’t count and they do, they count so much. I have been thinking only of myself in making so many conditions to us being together.’

I sigh, I know that Sophie’s words are true, Nate loves her so much and I know he has sacrificed his own needs for hers. ‘But I thought you couldn’t return there, to America,’ I remind her.

‘I know,’ she nods. ‘But you know what, whatever happens, I should give this to Nate, he deserves it. The visit at Thanksgiving went well and it felt good to be back in Krystal, it felt right, despite what went on there. Besides,’ she glancing anxiously towards me, ‘I want my baby to have family around them.’

‘Your baby?’ My eyebrows hit my hairline in surprise, ‘you’re pregnant?’

Grinning over at me, Sophie nods, ‘about four months, or so,’ she confides.

‘Four months!’ I cannot help but mirror the happiness in Sophie’s eyes, it’s about time she had some normal in her life. ‘Fuck, Soph! That’s huge, Hun,’ I stand and hug her tight. ‘So, pleased for you, girl.’ I am, I am so happy for her, but a piece of my soul pierces with pain, knowing I won’t be part of the baby or Sophie’s life.

‘You mean that?’ She uncharacteristically squeezes me tightly.

I pull away and send her a watery smile, ‘Soph,’ I hum, ‘I have always wanted the best for you, you know that,’ I remind her. ‘I am just a bit sad that I won’t be able to share it all with you, that’s all.’

‘I’m sorry, Shauna. I know you need me right now, but Nate needs me more. You have an incredible family and a bright future ahead of you. Nate needs to be around his family. I will always be at the end of a Skype call or phone,’ she promises. ‘You and Emmy can come visit, you will love Krystal,’ she states, ‘I know you came to Denver, when I was missing, but Krystal is something else,’ she gushes, excitedly.
